Health Fairs

A marathon of hands-on healthcare...

We participated in two separate health fairs for the people of Grenada, the first one being in the busy streets of downtown St. George's and the second one being in the more rural area of Grenville.

The health fair we conducted in St. George's was by far the busiest. We had high traffic for the entire duration. We had multiple stations that clients moved through, including blood pressure, blood sugar, eye examination, height and weight, education, and breast examinations. My classmates and I rotated through the stations so that we got to experience each aspect of the health fair. Though we had to work practically elbow to elbow in extremely sweaty conditions, I could tell that we were truly making a difference for the individuals who used the health fair as their annual checkup. Many people were surprised to learn they had high blood pressure or high blood sugar, and we were able to refer them to a physician so that they could start medication.

Our second health fair in Grenville was not as busy as the first one, but it still allowed us to make an impact on the people who lived further from the bustling center of St. George's. At this health fair we had the opportunity to work closely with students from St. George's College of Nursing, which was a lot of fun. It was interesting to compare the different aspects of our programs and chat about things we had in common, such as our upcoming licensure  examinations. We also got to interact more with the children who attended the health fairs by doing crafts with them. The Grenville health fair was a more relaxing yet still meaningful experience when compared to the St. George's one, but I feel that we made the largest impact at the St. George's health fair.
